[INRAD] Roofing filter for FT-1000

Hello, Glenn and All.

I have the Inrad roofing filter in two FT1000MP Mk V's. I had one of the Mk V's for over six months without the roofing filter. I have participated in contests before and after filter installation. What my observations are is that there is considerably less IMD from close in signals on both CW and SSB. With that being the case, I believe that the dynamic range has improved considerably. I also noticed that the radio handles QRN better. I do a lot of weak signal listening and from a subjective viewpoint, I seem to hear signals better with the roofing filter in place. Without scientific measurements, my observation is that the noise floor is lowered. The older of the two radios got the roofing filter and a 500 kHz Inrad filter in the sub-receiver. The rest of the filter positions have Yaesu filters in place. I also made the CW noise mod on the audio board while I was at it. I use that radio primarily for SSB. I can listen comfortably to strong SSB signals within 2 kHz using IDBT with no desensing. Before the roofing filter, I needed at least 4 kHz. The other Mk V has the roofing filter, the CW noise mod, and all optional filter positions have Inrad filters in place. I use it for CW. I can have a strong CW signal within 1 kHz without desensing and thumping. I also notice that the filter skirts seem very sharp; much sharper than the Yaesu filters. Overall, I am very happy with the roofing filters in both radios. I had a Ten Tec Orion for over two years. While the Mk V does not have the dynamic range the Orion does and does not have as sophisticated DSP, with the roofing filters I believe my Mk V's will hold their own with the Orion. Don't know anything about the Orion II. Finally, I can now listen on CW with the NOR filter position (2 kHz filters) when QRN is not bad and enjoy the experience. Before, any strong signals within 6-8 kHz meant IMD and desensing.

By the way, I drive a Ten Tec Centurion amplifier with the Mk 5's. The band data DIN connector is available from RF Connection. Mouser and other parts houses don't seem to have a DIN connector that fits. I tried three different connectors from Mouser to no avail. To drive my Centurion, I use pin three to ground, pin 2 to amplifier key in, and pin 8 to amplifier key out. Works great!

My recommendation is to get the roofing filter.

Regards,

Jim, K4ZMV

  All -

I'm giving consideration to purchasing the roofing filter for the Yaesu FT-1000. I would appreciate real world feedback on the performance in this radio.
